Zijin to reduce the emission of harmful gases in Bor: Vucic speaks about importance of copper
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic spoke with representatives of China's Zijin company about the development of a new mine, Cukaru Peki, and the RTB Bor mining complex itself.
President Vucic asked the company's representatives to install additional capacities and reduce emission of harmful gases from the smelter, and provide completely clean air for the town's inhabitants by the end of the year at the latest, the presidential press service said.
The Cukaru Peki project is significant from the aspect of rapidly increasing production of copper concentrate and then copper cathode. An investment of $500 million is projected for the development and construction of the upper zone of the Cukaru Peki Mine.
With the opening of this mine, which is planned for October 2021, Serbia will become the second largest copper producer in Europe, after Poland, and Serbia's share in the production of this metal will increase from the current five to 18 percent.
During the meeting, the dynamic and a development plan for the mining basin were presented. Zijin took on the obligation to invest over $1 billion in upgrading, expanding or building four mines and smelters by the sixth anniversary of the acquisition.
President Vucic stressed that it is expected that, after the completion of the system for reducing air pollution, emissions of harmful gases will be within the allowed limit.
The air pollution reduction system is expected to become operational in August, a statement said.
