Fruska Gora's oases: Besenovo and Ledinci lakes are pearls of nature located near Novi Sad
In Serbia, there is a mountain that has as many as 16 lakes, 17 monasteries and 40 waterfalls. Its name is Fruska Gora.
Of the 16 lakes, 12 have are well maintained and welcome swimmers and fishers during the summer, but also nature lovers who camp, barbecue and enjoy on the shores. The best known lakes of Fruska Gora are Besenovo Lake, or as some call it Beli Kamen, Ledinci Lake, Sot, Borkovac and Pavlovac.
Many who have visited the lakes in this part of Serbia claim that two stand out for their unreal beauty - Besenovo and Ledinci.
Besenovo Lake
Besenovo Lake is located near Besenovacki Prnjavor in the territory of the municipality of Sremska Mitrovica. This is about 80 kilometers away from Belgrade and about an hour's drive if you travel by highway and through Ruma. Lake Besenovo is about 30 kilometers away from Novi Sad.
Besenovo Lake or Beli Kamen ("White Stone") as it is known colloquially, was created in the 1980s and became popular only in 2004. It was formed in the place where the Beocin cement plant carried out a mining operation. A strange way to create a lake, but still possible.
It happened that an aquifer was cut through during surface mining, so parts of the mine began to fill up with water. The lake is incredibly blue, reaching an average depth of 15 meters. The diameter of Lake Besenovo is about 200 meters.
Do not be surprised if you see some visitors putting mud from Lake Beli Kamen on their skin, because it is considered to be extremely healing. Although the average depth is around 15 meters, its maximum depth is estimated at as much as 50 meters and more.
Ledinci Lake
Ledinci Lake is a small artificial lake on Fruska Gora, located near the settlement of Stari Ledinci near Novi Sad. This lake used to be a small tourist resort that was supposed to become the center of a nature park, but it has become privately owned.
The lake was formed during the NATO bombing in 1999. During the aggression, water pumps were damaged in the Srebro quarry. They stopped pumping water from the quarry, so groundwater, as well as the two small rivers, started to fill up the quarry and thus created this beautiful lake.
This lake covers an area of four hectares and is surrounded on all sides by steep cliffs. The average depth is 15 meters, but just like Besenovo Lake, it is assumed that the real depth is 50 meters. The lake is located at an altitude of 300 meters, and is recognizable by its green, cold and clear water, thanks to the inflow of water from the tributaries.
Visitors like to enjoy an observation deck from which they have a beautiful view of Ledinci Lake. It can only be reached on foot, along trails through the Fruska Gora woods.
