Vucic on mandatory vaccination: I'd do it, but there's Constitution. We have "black hole" regions
Serbia cannot introduce mandatory vaccination because that goes against the Constitution, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said during a visit to the ZF factory in Pancevo.
When asked by journalists whether Serbia can follow the examples of Greece and France, which have ordered mandatory vaccination for certain categories of the population, and, since entry to the Exit festival was allowed with digital vaccination certificates, whether the same can be done in cinemas, theaters ...
"Germany tried the same thing, but then gave up on it because of rights. We have a constitution according to which all our citizens are equal. You know what a proponent of the vaccine I am. But how can I tell citizens that somebody can enter a shopping mall and another person cannot because they have not been vaccinated? How do I defend the Constitution? Although there's not need for me to say what I think about people who avoid vaccines, who think they are smarter than doctors, pharmaceutical scientists... we are not talking about simple things," said Vucic.
He stressed that the situation has improved in recent days.
"Of course it's not enough. We have entire regions like Tutin, Sjenica, Novi Pazar... like black holes - strange people, I don't know what that's about, or if it's us who didn't do a good job. We will work on introducing raffles, paying people to get vaccinated," said the president.
He mentioned that it is possible to make appeals and take concrete steps.
"We cannot trample on the Constitution, that is our problem that we are facing. And if you ask me if I would personally be a supporter of what Macron or Mitsotakis are doing - yes, I would do it tomorrow, but there is a limiting factor called the Constitution of Serbia. I would do it tomorrow because I think that those people who are not getting vaccinated ar terribly irresponsible," Vucic explained.
