"Best news I could get": Firefighter delighted after learning that Gasa is going to get treatment
Firefighter Djordje Vukicevic, who found the captain's armband of Cristiano Ronaldo and put it up for auction to raise money for medical treatment of toddler Gavrilo Djordjevic, is delighted with the news that marked this Monday - the necessary funds have been secured for this adorable boy from Kragujevac, who will finally be able to get the most expensive medicine in Budapest.
"I am thrilled. I couldn't have gotten better news today. I am very glad that my colleagues and I helped in his fight. The most important thing is that the money has been raised and that Gavrilo is going to get treatment," Vukicevic told Telegraf.rs.
After Ronaldo threw his Portugal captain's armband onto the grass of the Red Star stadium while leaving the pitch after an unrecognized goal, it went into the hands of firefighter Djordje Vukicevic. He knew immediately what he was going to do with it, and he was thinking about that even before he went to the game, where he was present in his professional capacity.
"When I left home, I wished that if I got something durig that match, it would go to charity. That's what happened. Before the game, I saw an advertisement for baby Gavrilo, so there was no dilemma when I took the armband to whom it would go. Regardless of the fact that I want to get that memorabilia I would always give it up for humanitarian purposes. It's much better to help someone than to have that for yourself," Djordjee told our portal as soon as the armband reached his hands and he put it up for auction on the Limundo website.
Ronaldo's armband was in the end bought by the Mozzart betting parlor for 7.5 million dinars. In addition, members of the Sector for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia collected a million dinars for Gavrilo.
And in order to get that treatment, this little boy who suffers from a rare and severe disease, spinal muscular atrophy, had to raise 2.5 million euros, which is the price of the most expensive drug that he needs. The money was supposed to be collected by tomorrow, May 25, but more than 400,000 euros were missing.
The news that brought tears of joy to everyone, especially to Gavrilo's parents, arrived today. The Ministry of Health announced that after this morning's conversation between the president of Serbia and representatives of the Ministry of Health, the rest of the money was provided for the treatment of Gavrilo.
"The funds will be available to the family immediately, so that baby Gavrilo can be referred to treatment as soon as possible," the Ministry of Health announced.
Spinal muscular atrophy is an extremely serious and progressive disease that often has fatal outcome. The disease is a consequence of a gene mutation and is manifested by the loss of basic life functions such as walking, digestion, swallowing and breathing. Because of it, Gasa cannot hold his head up, he sits and crawls.
For the first three months of his life he developed and progressed well. However, the parents noticed that he stopped moving his arms and legs and had difficulty breathing, after which was diagnosed with this rare and serious disease.
At the age of five months, Gavrilo received his first therapy (Spinraza) that is available in Serbia. Fortunately, gene therapy (Zolgensma) has recently been approved that has given patients a chance to deal with this vicious disease. Gavrilo is one of them!
