The reason for recalling the ambassador of Serbia to Poland, Nikola Zurovac, was not the content of the letter that he signed, but the fact that he did not inform the minister about his act, to whom he answers for his work, says Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic.

Namely, Zurovac signed a letter in support to the Polish LGBT community along with 40 other ambassadors, without informing Minister Selakovic.

"The ambassador never informed anybody about it. We are not talking about the subject of the letter and its content. To avoid any insinuations, it was not the content of the letter, but the failure of the Serbian ambassador in approaching something about which he did not inform the person to whom he answers for his work," Selakovic said when asked about that case.

Selakovic said that any action of an ambassador in the country of accreditation can improve or disrupt Serbia's bilateral relations with that country, and that is why there is a complex mechanism where the ambassador is under obligation to consult with their ministry.

"That is the kind of thing that must not happen. Whatever he signed, without asking, can disrupt a relationship and that is the problem," said the head of Serbian diplomacy.

Asked whether that meant that the government would not have allowed him to sign such a letter, Selakovic said this amounts to speculation about what would have happened, and that in this case it is a matter of work and professional discipline, which, he says, is the main problem.

The minister of foreign affairs decided previously that Ambassador Zurovac must urgently return to our country, because he signed a letter of support to the Polish LGBT community with another 40 ambassadors from other countries, but did not inform Minister Selakovic about it.

The Serbian diplomacy was left completely unprepared for the expectedly negative reaction from Poland's conservative authorities. The consequence of everything was Selakovic's canceled visit to Poland.

"Zurovac signed the letter a day before Selakovic's visit to Poland. This was met with a negative reaction from the conservative authorities there, especially since the countries of the region, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, did not support the letter. Due to this, the visit of the minister of foreign affairs to Poland, which was supposed to take place today and tomorrow, was canceled," reports said on Wednesday.
