Zeman apologized for 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia, Vucic thanks him: No one has said that yet
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic began his official visit to the Czech Republic today in Prague. He was welcomed in the Prague Castle by the President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman, with military honors and the sounding of the anthems of the two countries, followed by a ceremony of awarding decorations.
During this this ceremony, President of the Czech Republic Zeman presented President Vucic with the Order of the White Lion, while and the president of Serbia presented his Czech colleague Zeman with the Order of the Republic of Serbia on a Ribbon (a decoration awarded in 2020).
The Order with which President Vucic was decorated is the highest state recognition of the Czech Republic, which is handed over personally by the president, and was among others also awarded to Jacques Chirac, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, Lech Kaczynski...
Zeman apologizes to Serbia for the 1999 bombing
After this ceremony, a face to face meeting of the presidents of the two countries began, followed by a plenary meeting of the delegations of the Republic of Serbia and the Czech Republic, led by Presidents Vucic and Zeman.
After those meetings, the two presidents began addressing the media.
At the beginning of his address, the Czech president said that he wanted to apologize to the Serbian people for the 1999 bombing.
"Forgive us, that was a mistake. By requesting forgiveness and offering an apology, I've said it and saved my soul," he told a press conference.
Serbian president thanked Zeman for these words and said that since 1999, none of the countries that participated in the bombing have done it.
"The apology of President Zeman are the words of a brave man who is not ingratiating himself to anyone. We will never forget these words, which nobody else has uttered so far," Vucic said.
A series of meetings during the two-day visit
The president of the Czech Republic will then organize a lunch in honor of the President of Serbia Vucic. After the lunch, the plan is to write in the book of honorary guests of the Prague Castle.
On the first day of the visit, the president of Serbia will have separate meetings with the President of the House of Representatives of the Parliament Radek Vondracek, and with the President of the Senatec Milos Vistrcilo.
