Vucic: Borders can't be changed without conflicts, we insist on UN Charter-established borders
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met today in Belgrade with his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor.
After the meeting, the president of Serbia said that several important topics were discussed.
"Serbia has a high rate of average growth and it is crucial that we dedicate ourselves to reforms. I believe that we can achieve even better results with our friends from the region. We have good dialogue about the position of Serbs in Slovenia, but also of Slovenians in Serbia," said Vucic.
"To us, the role of Slovenian in the Western Balkans is always important," said the president of Serbia and added that most of the meeting was dedicated to regional issues, Kosovo and Metohija and the region.
Speaking about the dialogue, he said that Belgrade is always ready for talks.
"We are always ready for dialogue because we believe that no frozen conflict is good, see how that ends, every five years someone unfreezes it," the president added.
About "non paper" and changing of borders
"After the tragedy that befell the Western Balkans in the 1990s, new borders were formed with the hope of a lasting peace. That is what I meant when I spoke about not believing that a peaceful change of borders is possible. Even if it started like that, it would not end peacefully, I am convinced of that," said the president of Slovenia.
On the other hand, the president of Serbia said that this was the most difficult issue for him, especially in front of representatives of those countries that recognized Kosovo as independent.
"When I hear people talk about no border changes, I agree that there are no border changes without conflict. However, Serbia insists that the borders established by the UN charter should be respected. If that is the case, we fully support it," said Vucic.
Pahor: I am open to all advice, but also warnings
Borut Pahor addressed the public after the meeting with Aleksandar Vucic and on that occasion stressed that today's visit to Belgrade was primarily an introduction to a summit of the Brdo-Brioni Process.
"I am extremely glad to be here today and that the conversation was good. The main topic is the summit of the Brdo-Brioni Process and enlargement of the European Union, and under what conditions future member states will be doing that. The greatest interest of all of us is peace and stability, that is what President Vucic said and what he always stresses, and that is the message we will send to the European Union on Monday.
We are in favor for peace in all our diversity. After a year and a half, this will be the first meeting of the kind, and an inspired piece of information will be sent to the world, turned towards reforms in the countries in order for them become a part of the European Union as soon as possible. I am open to all advice and warnings that the president of Serbia informed me about, I am grateful to him for that. We are leaders and now we have to show strength and try to achieve good bilateral relations in Southeastern Europe," said Pahor.
Before Belgrade, Pahor was in Pristina
Before visiting Belgrade, the president of Slovenia visited Pristina, where he met with the president of the provisional institutions, Vjosa Osmani, and reiterated his position that he was against changing the borders in the Balkans and that he holds a completely different position compared to the content of a "non-paper" on that subject.
"I do not agree with a change of borders, my position on this is completely the opposite. I want to convince interlocutors at the Brdo-Brioni summit to continue the process of enlargement and reforms. That is a historic need," he said after the meeting with Osmani, commenting once again on the unofficial document that came from Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa.
