35-year-old Marija M. a mother of two, originally from Serbia, was brutally killed by her ex-partner last Thursday in Vienna.

Although the motive for the murder has not yet been confirmed, it is suspected that it was a crime of passion, and that the suspect Albert L. (42) could not bear the fact that Marija had ended their relationship.

They allegedly broke up a few days before the murder. On the fateful Thursday, Marija escorted her 13-year-old daughter out of the apartment, when suddenly her ex appeared at the door. It is not known if they argued first, but shots from a firearm were soon heard. Marija, who was shot in the leg and in the head, somehow managed to crawl, wounded, to the courtyard of the building, and by then the neighbors had already called the police and an ambulance. Unfortunately, the woman's life could not be saved...

The suspected killer was arrested by the police in the same yard. After the bloody feast, which happened around 8 pm, he sat on a bench and drank himself unconscious. A gun with which the murder was committed was also found on the ground near the bench. At the time of the arrest, the suspect had more than 3 permilles of alcohol in his blood.

He was immediately taken into custody, but they could not interrogate him on Friday either, as he was still intoxicated. Only after the suspect sobered up, he was taken before the prosecutor, where he allegedly defended himself by not saying anything.

Marija's brother Darko M. still can't recover from the shock. In a trembling voice, he tells the media that his sister "didn't stand a chance."

"I was hoping she'd pull through, but he shot her in the head. She didn't stand a chance," Darko told Heute, speaking through tears.

He says that Albert, who is suspected of killing his sister, could not come to terms with the fact that Marija wanted to cut off all contact with him.

"He did not want to accept that it was over between them. She packed his things, made a decision. He couldn't take it. He was waiting for her to open the door, the children came out before that and then he fired," says Darko.

The brother of the victim is now bitter because he heard that there is a possibility that his sister's killler will be imprisoned for only three years because he committed the crime in a state of severe intoxication, which "excludes guilt" according to the laws in Austria. Darko is convinced that the killer was sober (when he committed the crime), and then drank a lot in a short period of time.

"He was sitting on a bench and asked a neighbor if he would give him something to drink. Then he put two bottles in his mouth and waited for the police to come and pick him up," says Darko.

The suspect is the owner of a pub in Vienna. In the previous days, the Viennese held a protest in front of the pub, asking the authorities to better protect women, noting that Marija was the 9th victim of femicide since the beginning of the year.

The media report that the scene of the crime was horrific. According to unconfirmed information, Marija's two-year-old toddler was in the apartment at the time when Marija was shot. The neighbors took to removing the child, who was calling for the mother all the time. They say that the murder suspect lived in the apartment for some time, but that they never heard an argument coming from there.
