Water polo player accused of urinating on a church: I study in Belgrade, priest is my relative

Danilo Adzic, a member of the DPS party in Kotor (Montenegro) and a water polo player of the club Primorac, who once played for Red Star and Partizan in Belgrade, has denied allegations in the Montenegrin media that he participated in dishonorable actions in front of the church of St. Nicholas in Kotor.

"I want to repeat once again that the headlines and articles that mention me these days, do not correspond with the truth and represent a shameless manipulation of the public opinion.

I grew up in Kotor and was raised with all the customs and culture by which this city is recognizable. I was baptized in the church of St. Nicholas, I am related to the family of Father Nemanja Krivokapic and I could never, even in my wildest dreams, imagine a scenario in which I would be accused of the heinous act I am accused of," the water polo player said.

He added that he is experiencing great inconvenience due to the whole situation.

"It is clear to me that this is a combination of circumstances, while the media lynching that I am suffering these days makes any denial completely meaningless. I am experiencing great inconveniences unjustifiably, and the accusations against me affect me as a person, as an athlete and as a Kotor resident," said Adzic.

The Primorac water polo player also said that athletes must not be nationalists, that he studies in Belgrade, and has played for Red Star and Partizan.

"I am an athlete, and an athlete must not be a nationalist. I am a student at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. I played for Red Star and Partizan. I am convinced that all my colleagues, from studies or sports clubs, will confirm that they cannot imagine me in the role that the media has been forcibly pushing me into in recent days. The only thing that encourages me in all this is the fact that no one who has ever met me can imagine that these allegations are true.

My experience of my hometown in which I want to stay, contradicts any kind of discrimination or insult on any basis. My upbringing, growing up, perception of coexistence in our area, do not leave room for insults and attacks, and I would particularly not comment on any inappropriate actions that belittle a valuable sacral building in my Kotor," said Adzic.

He also said that after the media allegations, he met with the parish priest of Kotor, and that they "clarified the set of unfortunate circumstances."

"After the media allegations, I met with Father Nemanja, for whom I have sincere respect, and in a friendly conversation we clarified the set of unfortunate circumstances that had led to this constructed story. I want to repeat once again that the headlines and articles in which I am mentioned these days, do not correspond with the truth and represent a shameless manipulation of te public opinion. I would never allow myself to commit the misdeeds that I am accused of, out of respect for my own dignity, my family, the sport I play, the church where I was baptized, my Kotor and the local parliament of which I am a member," Adzic concluded.
