Vucic: measures will be lifted when epidemiologists say so. Numbers still growing in central Serbia

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said as he was touring construction works on a bridge over the South Morava River that the number of new coronavirus cases in Belgrade is slightly dropping on a daily basis, while it is growing in central Serbia. He pointed out that the measures will be relaxed in Serbia when epidemiologists agree with that.

He said that he would get vaccinated next Monday or Tuesday in one of the smaller towns.

"In Belgrade, the numbers are falling slightly, but they are more stable and no longer growing, while in central Serbia the number of newly infected people is growing. And that is a reflection of vaccination. And we see that the number of those infected does not increase dramatically while the number of vaccinated people who become infected is falling. A vaccine is a vaccine," said Vucic.

He said that he would get vaccinated as he announced earlier, and that is the moment when the number of those in Serbia who received the second dose of the vaccine exceeds one million.

"I realized that everyone wants to live my life. That's how it goes, I guess. the head coach of the national football team gets it the worst, and then the president of Serbia, on that issue. I have already announced that I will do that when the number of revaccinated people exceeds one million. That is expected to hapen these days, and I will be vaccinated on Monday or Tuesday. And, I will do it in one of the small towns and I invite people to get vaccinated themselves," he said.

We are not a desert island

He said that he was not interested in the criticism or praise from those commenting on the fact that people from the region are getting vaccinated in our country, and pointed out that we are not a desert island, and cannot be successful if they are not vaccinated as well:

"I have no problem with that. It's important that people are satisfied, that they have at least partially protected themselves. That is what is important to us. I have seen criticism from some people because we are vaccinating people from the region. We cannot be successful if the people in the region are not. We are not a desert island. We do not live alone in this world."

Asked when the measures will be relaxed and students allowed to return to schools, he said that he is sick and tired of those who are ingratiating themselves by constantly saying that the measures should be relaxed.

"We have the softest possible measures. Everything is closed, from Austria, Italy, to Germany... Wherever you go. Only us in Serbia (are not in lockdown). Let's lower the numbers first, then we'll cancel the measures. It's not a political issue. I just watch them say, 'well, I'm in favor of lifting the measures'. Why? Didn't you get medicines, ventilators... People, stop with that. Let the Crisis HQ do its job. When the conditions are met... The first day ... The state is not a game for beginners to be ingratiating themselves to someone. We have to deal with saving lives first, then with the doctors. The least number of our doctors work in Covid hospitals. These people were falling off their feet. People are dying on us. We also stopped applauding the doctors for the sake of scoring small points.

"The measures will be lifted when epidemiologists agree with that. Every time, I will support the professionals and especially those heroes from hospitals who are fighting to save the lives of our loved ones. It's difficult to deal with new strains of coronavirus. They are much more infectious."
