Newly elected minister in Kosovo has indictment raised against him for abuse of office

The newly elected Kosovo minister of infrastructure in Albin Kurti's government, Liburn Aliu, was indicted last year for abuse of official position during his time as director in the municipality of Pristina, the Municipal Basic Prosecutor's Office has confirmed.

Aliu tried to deny the allegations, saying that he never received such an indictment, Tanjug is reporting.

According to a statement from the prosecution, the prosecutor made a decision to launch an investigation on April 17, 2019 and carried out all actions related to the case, interviewing all the suspects separately.

According to the statement, as reported by RTS, Aliu was questioned on August 5, 2019, while based on the collected evidence, the prosecutor filed an indictment for the criminal offense of "abuse of official position or authority" on July 24, 2020.

"Allegations that the accused Liburn Aliu did not receive the indictment from the prosecution do not stand, because indictments are submitted to the competent court. When an indictment is sent to the court, it is under obligation to deliver it to the parties to the proceedings.

During the initial hearing, a judge or a judge presiding over a panel delivers a copy of the indictment to the defendant or defendants, if they had not previously received copies of the indictment, which means that the indictment was submitted to the parties by the competent court," the statement said.

Although there is an indictment against him, Aliu participated in the election last month on the Self-Determination ticket, became a member of the Assembly in Pristina, and then a government minister.
