We reveal: Beside the British, has any other coronavirus strain been confirmed in Serbia
The presence of other new strains of coronavirus has not been proven in Serbia, Medical Faculty professor and virologist Tanja Jovanovic, a member of the Crisis HQ, has told Telegraf.rs.
So far, only the British strain of coronavirus has been confirmed in our country, while the assumption that there are others was made on Friday by the provincial secretary of health, Zoran Gojkovic, who spoke after the session of the Crisis HQ set up to combat the Covid epidemic.
When asked whether the British strain is to blame for the growth in the number of new cases in Serbia, and whether other strains of coronavirus have appeared in our country, he said that other mutations are probably in circulation.
"The culprit for what is happening to us now is coronavirus, all possible mutations of it, but those of us who don't adhere to the measures are the biggest culprits. Other strains are probably circulating, but that is not so important at this moment. Research is being done, it's not up to me to talk about it. Our virologists monitor that," said Gojkovic.
On the other hand, Professor Jovanovic told Telegraf.rs today that the presence of other strains has not been proven in our country yet.
"We don't know whether or not they are here, but we have not proven them yet," Professor Dr. Jovanovic told our portal.
The first case of the British strain of coronavirus was registered in Serbia on January 24. A passenger from London, who had a negative PCR test, brought that strain in, while her husband developed severe symptoms.
This virus proved to be more contagious and the latest research also says that it is more deadly. It is assumed that it is detected in 30% of new cases of Covid 19 in Serbia.
"The share of the British strain among the infected is increasing. It is being registered more and more often, and what has been noticed is that it is transmitted quickly," Professor Dr. Jovanovic told our portal.
Experts also say that it affects children more and spreads among them.
Other strains are present in the countries in the region.
As we recently repored, in Croatia, in addition to the British, New York and South African strains have also been confirmed, while the South African one is also present in Slovenia.
