A year since the Clinical and Hospital Center (KBC) Dragisa Misovic in Belgrade received the first coronavirus patients, the situation has not changed much. The best indicator of how serious it is at the moment is the fact that almost a third of those hospitalized require treatment in intensive care units, the head of anesthesia at the KBC, Duska Ignjatovic, has told RTS.

The situation has not changed for a year, we'd get a little room to breathe, and then it hits us again, Ignjatovic described the conditions in which the doctors in the Covid system work.

"Currently, over 250 patients are in the hospital, and about a third of them in intensive care, that is, about 70 people who require intensive treatment, oxygen support," says Dr. Ignjatovic.

Treatment protocols have changed over the past year, a lot more is known, but there are still surprises, says the head of the anesthesia department.

"Inside 48 hours there is dramatic deterioration of the clinical picture. You're talking to a patient now, and you're looking at their parameters and you know that in just two hours they can be in a very bad condition," describes Dr. Ignjatovic.

According to her, people often make mistakes because they try to treat themselves and see the doctor too late.

"There are delays, self-treatment. You cannot treat yourself and then after nine days of that, patients appear in a very serious condition," Dr. Ignjatovic stressed.

But the biggest problem, she believes, is that citizens have relaxed.

"It's as if we decided with the New Year that this is it, that we are tired of coronavirus. It's not enough to get vaccinated and then take off our masks. It's not just a matter of adopting the measures, the measures have been adopted, but they are not respected and controlled," the head of anesthesia at the KBC Dragisa Misovic pointed out.

It is unacceptable, she added, that concerts are being held and new ones advertised.

"Those are closed spaces and the fact that you measure someone's temperature (at the entrance) means nothing. How many asymptomatic cases are there, people who don't have any symptoms, but that doesn't mean they do not transmit the virus. For  us doctors, such behavior is disappointing," Dr. Ignjatovic stressed in her statement for RTS.
