Since the beginning of the year, 53 people have been killed in traffic accidents, which is 30 less than last year, says the Traffic Safety Agency. However, as many as 56 pedestrians were killed last year, of which two children, while the rest of the victims fall into the age category of 60 and over.

The appeal of the Agency is that the elderly should be accompanied by a younger member of the family, that they should dressed in brightly colored clothes and should understand that it is not necessary to be in a hurry while out because grocery stores are open all day.

"We are appealing on pedestrians to be crossing the street at pedestrian crossings. This is especially important for people over the age of 65. They are mostly among the victims, because, over time, the psychophysical abilities in traffic of this category of people decline, a 65-year-old pedestrian still thinks they can cross the street at the same speed as before, however, over time, their reflexes decrease," the director of the Agency, Dusko Pesic, told RTS.

Especially in urban areas, drivers must also respect speed limits, especially in the vicinity of schools, because only the speed of 30 kilometers per hour guarantees that children will not be fatally injured, or more precisely, the chances of a lethal outcome are lower.

"Also, I draw the drivers' attention to the fact that they have to adjust their driving to weather conditions and must not be surprised by pedestrians on surfaces such as marked pedestrian crossings," said Damir Okanovic from the Traffic Safety Committee.

The police will step up control at pedestrian crossings, especially because of those who talk on their phones or use headphones, since they are not able to hear sounds and traffic around them.

Among those killed in traffic accidents, many have been scooters and electric bicycles drivers, so the Agency is appealing on everyone to use their own lane, and free up the sidewalks for pedestrians.
