Vesic: At Crisis HQ, City of Belgrade will vote against curfew and any new restrictions

The City of Belgrade will always vote against any new restrictions, including a curfew, at the session of the Crisis HQ, because such measures were not proposed even in November, when there were almost 8,000 infected people a day, Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic has told TV Prva.

He said that the experience from last the weekend, when restaurants and shopping centers were open until 2 pm, showed us that we had the same number of people in the same place in a shorter period of time, that such measures do not bring results and there is no reason to propose them.

"Such measures have been counterproductive because citizens could not do social distancing. The essence of proposing measures is to achieve distance so that we don't become infected. Belgrade's position is very clear, and that is to respect the existing measures without new restrictions and to carry out both vaccination and revaccination. I can proudly say that more than 20 percent of adult citizens of Belgrade have been vaccinated by yesterday, while almost 11 percent have been revaccinated. If we continue at this pace we will very soon have enough people to give us immunity, together with those who recovered (from Covid), which will allow us to live normal lives.

My job is to deal with the city's economy and any restriction, other than being impossible to implement, would have a disastrous impact on the economy and a large number of people would lose their jobs. I will never vote for such measures because we have so far shown that, as a country, we can find balance between protecting public health and the economy, and we should continue like that," Vesic stressed.

He reiterated that at the next session of the Crisis HQ, the City of Belgrade will be against any restrictions because it is completely irrelevant whether the hospitality industry works until 9, 6, or 2 pm.

"The essence is in respecting the measures and that is why it is better for people to be in a public space where control is possible than in private apartments. The communal police received five times more reports of noise coming from private apartments on Saturday and Sunday than the previous weekend, which means that people moved from restaurants and cafes to private apartments. Therefore, before any measures are taken, their effect should be considered. I repeat: respecting the measures, vaccination and revaccination, that is the position of Belgrade that I will strongly represent," Vesic concluded.
