In the last 24 hours, 91 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Croatia, while 11 more people lost their lives to Covid, the authorities announced.

There are 64 people on ventilators, nine more than the previous day.

During a press conference of the Croatian crisis HQ, it was announced that the New York strain of coronavirus has been confirmed in Croatia, and that a 40-year-old person who had no previous health problems died from it.

"The youngest deceased person was 40, that person had no comorbidities. The average age of the victims is 73. There are 14,074 people in self-isolation. As of February 27, 213,068 doses of the vaccine had been used. 153,085 people have been vaccinated. 59,983 people have been vaccinated with two doses, while 93,102 with one dose," said Vera Katalinic Jankovic.

Authorities said little is known so far about the new strain that has been discovered.

"We know little about the New York strain. The first news started appearing late last week. What we know so far is that it is one of the new variants of the virus that is spreading faster than the others. All persons coming from South Africa and Zanzibar are subject to the same measures as those coming from the United Kingdom and Brazil. As for other African countries, the same rules apply, they are third countries for us and they must have a negative PCR done in the previous 48 hours," said a member of the crisis HQ, Krunoslav Capak.

Capak added they previously had eight confirmed cases of the British strain.

"This was confirmed to us by a Spanish laboratory. Three British strain cases were confirmed at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, out of 300 samples we sent, we have 60 positives, two New York ones, and three confirmed South African ones. Those three people had been in Zanzibar," said Capak.
