"Kosovo is our cradle, essence of our identity": Patriarch addresses the most important Serb issue

The new leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Porfirije, said in a sermon given today after his enthronement that Kosovo and Metohija is not merely a myth for the Serbs, but an umbilical cord, the cradle and the essence of our identity.

"My biggest worry, but also that of our Church, is still our much-suffering Kosovo and Metohija, our spiritual Jerusalem, as Patriarch Irinej said it. For the Serbs, Kosovo and Metohija is simply not merely a myth, because a myth belongs to the world of imagination and there, we can be losing and winning. To us, Kosovo is a covenant, and that Kosovo covenant is connected to the New Testament, which is based on holiness," Porfirije stressed in his sermon.

That is why, he pointed out, Kosovo is for us a thread and an umbilical cord that connects us with our spiritual and historical cradle, with the essence of our identity.

"We are in Kosovo and Kosovo is in us, in our shrines, in the Cyrillic script and in the Kosovo Covenant. Kosovo is the heart of Serbia, our young generation sings that today," said the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

He addrf that the heart is an organ of life and love, so there is room for everyone in our Kosovo as well.

"Everyone can and should fit in a heart," said the patriarch, adding that there is a place for all people who will be brought closer to God through the beauty of Decani (a Serbian medieval monastery), where he himself took his first monastic vows, and the beauty of Gracanica, Devic, the Patriarchate of Pec and our other shrines (in Kosovo and Metohija).
