"Vaccinated people can transmit virus": Dr. Kisic Tepavcevic explains why masks are necessary

"People who received two doses of the vaccine and developed an immune response will not get sick in contact with coronavirus, but they can transmit it," epidemiologist and member of the Crisis HQ Darija Kisic Tepavcevic said today, reports Tanjug.

She told TV K1 that this is why it's important to wear a face mask even after vaccination, in order to protect others.

"A person who has been vaccinated and has antibodies will not get sick when in contact with coronavirus nor will they clinically manifest the disease, but they can transmit the virus. It is certain that they will carry the virus in the respiratory tract, in the nose, in the mouth, for some time after the infection. They will not get sick, but they can transmit the virus. Wearing masks for the sake of those around us very much makes sense," said Kisic Tepavcevic.

As she stressed, Serbia has cause for optimism because vaccination is going well, but the virus is constantly warning that it is here, that there is no room to relax, because the number of new  daily cases yesterday was around 2,500.

"We have reason for optimism, we are going in the right direction, but we must not relax. Until now we were just getting out of the way, wearing masks, now we have the opportunity to do something active and counterattack with the vaccine," stated Kisic.

In order to prevent an epidemic spread of the disease, she stressed, it is necessary for 60 to 70 percent of the population to develop immunity.

"Not in order for the virus to disappear, but so that it isn't showing up in an epidemic form," she said and added that it is necessary to vaccinate between 1.5 and two million people.
