Aleksandar Milikic, who killed Pavle Stankovic (17) with his van on a pedestrian crossing at the end of June, was sentenced today by the Higher Court to three years in prison, Novosti writes.

He also received a 4-year driving ban that will come into effect after he has served his sentence.

The court took into account that that he was sincerely remorseful, but also that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, that he was overtaking a bus and that he hit Stankovic on a pedestrian crossing.

In late January, Aleksandar told the court that he worked from 7 in the morning that day and that he came home at 5:30 pm. He was tired and hungry, because he hadn't eaten all day, and there was no food in the fridge, so he ordered some via an app on his phone.

"Then I had two beers, and when I received information that they could deliver the food only in an hour and a half, I decided to drive to the nearest fast food place in the van, because it was raining outside. Otherwise, I never use the van except for work, because my boss did not allow it.

On my way home, I saw that a city bus in front of me was suddenly slowing down and thinking that this was a bus stop, I started driving around it. I did not immediately see the pedestrian because of the bus, and the visibility was poor, because the lighting was weak and it was raining heavily.

When I noticed him, I swerved the steering wheel, but unfortunately I hit him. I lost control, so I hit a parked vehicle too," said Milikic.

The defendant said he then got out of the van and grabbed his head:

"I was in shock and I shouted for them to call the police and an ambulance. I chain smoked cigarettes and waited for them to come. This is no excuse for me, I feel very bad, not a day goes by that I don't remember it, but I am just telling you what happened.

My mother, sister and uncle tried several times to offer their condolences to the victim's family, but they refused to accept them and I understand that," the defendant said at the time.

When asked by Judge Milikic, he said that he did not dispute that he had 1.17 permilles of alcohol in his blood, that he drove at 70 kilometers per hour in a 50 kmph street, and that he knew that this was not allowed.
