Petkovic: Kurti can only speak about the Constitution of Serbia as a private person

"Unlike the Constitution of Serbia which takes reality into account and is the highest legal document of an internationally recognized state, what Kurti and his ilk call the 'Constitution of Kosovo' is a temporary act," the director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija stressed.

Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petkovic pointed out today that the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia recognizes the indisputable internationally legal fact that Kosovo and Metohija is a part of Serbia, and the only ones invited to deal with the content of our highest legal act are Serbian citizens.

"In that sense, Albin Kurti, as a citizen of Serbia, has the agency to talk about it, but only as a private person, because his opinion is worth as much as his one vote, while the content of our Constitution will certainly not be the subject of any talks under foreign auspices," Petkovic said in a statement.

Unlike the Constitution of Serbia, he added, which takes reality into account and is the highest legal document of an internationally recognized state, what Kurti and his ilk call the 'Constitution of Kosovo' is a temporary and a type of legally provisional act that needs to be changed urgently in order to implement everything that Pristina has committed itself to  doing during the Brussels dialogue.

In the days when we are approaching the anniversary of the adoption of the Sretenje Constitution and Statehood Day of our country, Petkovic reminded Kurti that Serbia has been implementing most modern and advanced constitutional and legal solutions since 1835, when its first Constitution (in renewed statehood) was adopted.

"Since then until this day, Serbian constitutions guarantee a maximum level of freedoms to all loyal citizens of Serbia, so when he once again becomes a loyal citizen of Serbia, all his personal and collective minority rights will be guaranteed," Petkovic said of Kurti.

The statement came after the leader of Self-Determination Albin Kurti welcomed the position of US President Joe Biden about mutual recognition as the only option in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, and added that so-called Kosovo's indepdence is not a topic of discussion, but rather that changing "Serbia's obsolete Constitution" is one.
