Dr. Tiodorovic: We could be out of this situation if we do one thing. Measures remain
Professor Dr. Branislav Tiodorovic, an epidemiologist and member of the Crisis HQ for the fight against coronavirus, said this morning that a complete calming of the epidemiological situation can be expected in the summer - if we vaccinate 3 million people. He also said that anti-epidemic measures will probably not be relaxed during tomorrow's meeting of the Crisis HQ, because the number of first examinations in Covid clinics is growing.
"The number of first examinations in Covid clinics is growing, and family infections are still occurring. There are whole families that are infected. Because of this nice weather, there has been more relaxing in the sense that not everyone has respected all the measures - keeping at least one and a half, two meters distance outdoors and wearing masks and disinfecting hands indoors. This can probably give us a slight increase or mainten the situation at this current level," Professor Dr.Tiodorovic told RTS and added that Covid hospitals still have a large number of patients.
He said that he was certain the entire medical part of the Crisis HQ is against the easing of measures, and hopes that others in the HQ think alike.
"This is a psychologically important problem. It is lasting too long. Maintaining the situation at this level is very important because of vaccination, it's important that we have a controlled situation with a declining trend of the disease," he said.
When asked when we will be coming out of the crisis, he mentioned the summer, but with one condition.
"If vaccination would go even faster and more comprehensively, if we vaccinate 3 million people and calm the situation, then in the summer we could be out of it completely. We would have a controlled situation, we would have sporadic infections, but we will be able to go on vacation," said Professor Dr. Tiodorovic.
He said that there is no news about new strains, except that it is now said that the South African strain may be a little more dangerous than the British, but he pointed out that the vaccines we have protect against them.
"Let's be clear, there are now over 100 new strains circulating in the world, at least according to what scientists are publishing. We can say that the vaccines we are receiving are quite good protection and that we should not worry about that. There is no reason to panic, but there is reason for caution," explained Professor Dr. Tiodroovic.
