Photos from this Serbian mountain are popular all over the world thanks to an artist from Kragujevac
The village of Sljivica has just under 150 inhabitants. The village is in the territory of the municipality of Rekovac, in the Pomoravlje District.
It is precisely village that has become famous all over the world and it's very likely that photographs of its landscapes are found in the homes of many people around the world. Aleksandar Saric from Kragujevac, whose photo from the area of Gledic Mountains was picked in a Microsoft competition, is responsible for that.
Mountains from which you can see far
Gledic Mountains are about 35 kilometers away from Kragujevac, and the second tallest in the area of Sumadija, right after Mt. Rudnik.
The highest peak is Samar and is located at an altitude of 922 meters.
Beside being rich in wood, Gledic Mountains also have magnificent water courses, meadows and pastures. It is believed that the name of these mountains (from the Serbian verb "gledati" - "to watch") comes from the phenomenal views they are known for, because during clear days you can see Homolje Mountains, but also Rudnik, Zlatibor and Kopaonik from here.
A more than 100-year-old village inn is mentioned as a special attraction of Gledic Mountains, which is located in the area of the village of Gledic that today has a little over 300 inhabitants.
Cultural treasures of Gledic Mountains
About 10 kilometers from the village of Oparic, in the immediate vicinity of Rekovac, is the medieval Kalenic monastery. This monastery, located at the foot of Gledic Mountains, is characterized as an immovable cultural good, that is, a cultural monument of exceptional importance.
The main monastery church is dedicated to Vavedenje (Presentation of the Holy Virgin Mary).
It is assumed that the Kamenac monastery, which is also located at the foot of Gledic Mountains, is the endowment of Despot Stefan Lazarevic, a medieval Serbian ruler. It is located in the village of Cestina and is a few kilometers away from the village of Gruza.
The monastery dates from the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century. The monastery's yard contains the tomb of 36 soldiers from the area of Podrinj who died in the wars at the start of the 20th century. Above the tomb is a monument.
Near the monastery, which is under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from Kragujevac, is an elementary school named after Rada Subakic, in the same space where Dr. Nikola Nikolajevic Gruzanin in 1818 established one of the first schools then newly liberated Serbia.
