Minister of the Interior Aleksandar Vulin today held a meeting with the chief and the heads of the Police Administration in Nis, at which all measures and activities undertaken by the police regarding a traffic accident in which two pedestrians died on a sidewalk when they were hit by a car on January 4 were analyzed and presented.

The meeting was also attended by the director of the Serbian police, Vladimir Rebic, and the head of the Traffic Police Administration, Nebojsa Arsov.

"At the meeting, a decision was made to replace the chief of the traffic police of the Police Administration in Nis," the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia announced.

The head of the traffic police department in Nis, Dragan Pesic, has been removed from his duties.

It was decided to strengthen traffic controls in the city, as well as the presence of traffic police, helped by police officers from other police departments.

The Police Administration in Nis will address the management of the City of Nis with concrete proposals in order to improve traffic infrastructure in the city.

In this traffic accident happened when an Audi swerved off the road in the Medijana Boulevard and drove onto a sidewalk with pedestrians, killing 12-year-old A P. and seriously injuring 48-eight-year-old D.I., who died in the hospital.

The driver behind the wheel of the Audi, 20-year-old N.S. from Belgrade, was quickly arrested.

Citizens in Nis protest

This traffic accident launched protests in Nis. Citizens started gathered at the place where the boy and the man were killed, and lit candles. Then they would go for peaceful protest walks through the city.

During the walks, they shouted "justice for Andrej" and "justice for our children."

The gathered citizens, among other things, demanded that the problem of arrogant driving in this city to be solved.

Meanwhile, Dragan Pesic had been the traffic police chief in the town for more than 10 years. At one point he was even seen as the most serious candidate for the new chief of the police in Nis.
