Dr. Jankovic: Celebrate New Year at home, if you gather - the beginning of 2021 will be bad for us
Immunologist Srdja Jankovic has urged citizens to reduce all contacts outside their household and to celebrate the New Year with their family, without going to parties outside the home.
He said that gatherings have been banned for a reason. The goal of the measures that are in force is to prevent the situation from worsening, then to stabilize it, and only then to see it start improving.
"It's too early to talk about the situation improving, but it's important that we don't see further deterioration. Proposals for further measures will depend on that. The emphasis is not only on tightening the measures, but also on implementing those measures that are in force," Jankovic stressed for TV Pink.
He pointed out that a ban on gatherings is in force, but that clubs, restaurants, and cafes are sold out for New Year's Eve.
"That doesn't go together. I am appealing on citizens to respect the measures and recommendations. If we are gathering, we will only make the new year worse than we want it to be as soon as it starts," he said.
He points out that collective immunity cannot be counted on as protection and that only a vaccine can change that.
"Relying on collective immunity now does not help, only wearing masks, distancing and not gathering does," he said and added that it was a big deal that a vaccine has been approved in Great Britain and that vaccination has started.
He remarked that the vaccine should not be viewed as a "magic wand." There are people who think that the vaccine will solve everything, but also those who think thatt he vaccine is the greatest evil. Neither extreme, as Jankovic put it,is good.
