Head of Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej, passes away
Serbian Patriarch Irinej (91) passed away this morning at the Military Clinic (VMC) Karaburma, after his condition deteriorated.
The information that the patriarch was infected with coronavirus came on November 4, and he was hospitalized on November 5 at the VMC Karaburma.
"As part of a regular testing procedure, and after the epidemiological assessment, a PCR test was performed for SARS COV2, which confirmed that His Holiness Patriarch of Serbia Mr. Irinej was positive, without symptoms and in excellent general condition. His Holiness was hospitalized in a COVID hospital in Belgrade," it was stated at the time, in the first announcement of the Patriarchate.
On that day he received His Excellency Attila Pinter, the Ambassador of Hungary to the Republic of Serbia, in the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade.
The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) informed about the deterioration of the patriarch's condition.
Serbian Patriarch Irinej was born as Miroslav Gavrilovic in the village of Vidova near Cacak on August 28, 1930. He was the 45th head of the Serbian Orthodox Church and also the bishop of Nis.
