Dr. Predrag Kon, epidemiologist and member of the Crisis HQ, explained in a post on Facebook when the ratio of PCR positives for coronavirus in relation to the number tested by this method makes sense to use as an indicator of the intensity of the activity of the virus. As he said, it only makes sense if the numbers used are accurate. He stated that the journalistic "Kon's coefficient" is not a serious indicator, that it is serious when taking the number of those tested for the first time in relation to the number of those positive.

The media mostly count the coefficient using the total number of tested people, and that number includes those who are tested for the second and third, not only the first time.

"That would mean using the numbers of those who report for the first time suspecting Covid-19 and the number of those who are PCR positive. This is certainly not the ratio between the numbers tested in total and tested as positive. As that is presented through journalists as 'Kon's coefficient', such a thing objectively does not exist as a serious indicator. I explained that the ratio of positives in relation to the number of those tested is important at the very beginning of the pandemic in the conditions of narrowed testing, when it was significant to orient yourself," Dr. Kon wrote and added that it had nothing to do with the made up "Kon's coefficient."

"Regular reports of the City Institute of Public Health (GZZJZ) provide very precise data on the number of positive PCR tested patients diagnosed as suspected of Covid, that is, the first examinations and this has nothing to do with the fictitious 'Kon's coefficient' and is important as an indicator of the activity of the virus," explained Dr. Predrag Kon.
