Serbian doctors first in the world to conduct a large study on effect of coronavirus on hearing
A team of doctors from the ORL Clinic of the Clinical Nis has conducted a study of the effect of coronavirus on hearing, which showed that Covid-19 can lead to mild to moderate hearing loss at high frequencies. This is the world's first comprehensive study of the effect of Covid on hearing, the director of the ORL clinic, Dusan Milisavljevic, told RTS.
Milisavljevic said that a team of experts was in the red zone and examined the influence of coronavirus on hearing in moderately to severely affected patients.
"We found a mild to moderate hearing loss at high frequencies. This means that coronavirus can also attack the auditory nerve. We have registered the patients, we invite them to further check their hearing and we invite them to enter the second phase, that is, to find adequate therapy," said Milisavljevic.
Based on this data, Milisavljevic pointed out that in some patients, hearing returns in a few weeks, while in others it takes months.
The director of the ORL clinic said that dexamestazone, a cortico preparation, is used during the treatment of patients with hearing impairment.
Milisavljevic said that there are two theories as to how coronavirus attacks and damages the auditory nerve.
The first, he says, is that micro clots form in the blood that hit the inner ear and damage the vascularization of the auditory nerve.
The second, according to him, is the lack of oxygen in hemoglobin, which damages the auditory nerve.
Milisavljevic stressed that no one in the world has yet conducted such a comprehensive study of the impact of Covid-19 on hearing, and added that the results of the study will be sent to a leading US journal dedicated to ORL topics.
