Slovenia doing worse than Croatia: Over 1,500 new cases in one day, authorities appeal not to go out

A record 1,503 new cases of coronavirus has been confirmed in Slovenia in the last 24 hours, according to unofficial data published today by portals close to the government. 5,891 people had been tested. Eight people died in the past 24 hours.

Reacting late last night to the news that a group of hundreds of people took to the streets in Maribor to protest against the curfew, Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced on Twitter that more than 1,100 new cases had already been confirmed and called for all government restrictions and epidemiological measures, including the ban on movement at night, to be respected.

"It is high time for these figures to sober us up, the introduced measures were necessary," said the prime minister, adding that those "making fun" of them and opposing these restrictions are endangering the lives and health of others.

From the early morning, the authorities have been appealing on citizens not to leave their homes unless they have to.

At the beginning of the week, Slovenia declared an epidemic in the second wave of coronavirus, which, among other things, includes a ban on movement from 9 pm until 6 am the next morning.

Some legal experts are challenging this decision and questioning its legality, so an initiative was sent to the Constitutional Court to examine its constitutionality.

In neighboring Croatia, 1,424 new cases have been confirmed in 24 hours, which is also a record in that country.
