Serbia has the largest gold reserve in the Balkans, here's how many tons we own
With 32 tons of gold, Serbia is the country with the largest gold reserve in the region, according to data from the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) and the World Gold Council.
According to the NBS, at the end of September our country had 32.12 tons of gold, worth 1.66 billion euros, or 1.95 billion dollars. About 96 percent of gold is kept in the form of gold bars, and the other four percent in the form of coins.
When it comes to storing the country's gold reserve, two thirds are kept in the vault of the central bank, and one third in the NBS accounts in safe foreign institutions. Gold reserve makes up 12.7 percent of our foreign exchange reserve.
According to data from the World Gold Council, when it comes to the second quarter of this year, North Macedonia had the largest gold reserve in the Balkans after Serbia, and it amounted to 6.89 tons. Slovenia has 3.17 tons, Bosnia and Herzegovina 2.98 tons, and Montenegro 1,090 kilograms, inherited from the former Yugoslavia.
Croatia's gold reserves are the smallest, because they don't really exist, since Croatia has sold its gold.
