A police officer was wounded in a shooting in front of the Croatian government building in Zagreb. The policeman was shot from an automatic weapon, and the attacker left St. Mark's Square after the shooting. After an extensive search, the police found the suspect in the attack, who, according to the Ministry of the Interior, committed suicide, Index reports.

The 31-year-old policeman has been transferred to the hospital, reports N1.

"He is stable. The vital signs are in order," said the director of the hospital Mario Zovak. The officer was shot several times. He has two gunshot wounds to his left arm and one wound on each side of his torso."

"We cannot estimate with how many bullets he was hit," the director said, adding that the police officer was now on a CT scan to see if there were any internal injuries.

"I heard gunshots, this wasn't happening even during the war," one citizen told N1.

An ambulance took the wounded policeman to the hospital at around 8:20 am.

The attacker allegedly brought the rifle in front of the government building in a wheelchair.

"The report was that a police officer was shot in front of the government. The ambulance arrived almost immediately after the report, but the police moved them behind the church of St. Mark. They had to be moved," Zarko Rasic, director of the Zagreb Ambulance, told 24sata.hr.

President of the Constitutional Court Miroslav Separovic said that he was getting ready for work, when they called him and told him not to come. The policeman who secures the building of the Constitutional Court is inside the building, so Separovic says that he was not injured.

"Our policeman informed us that he heard shots from an automatic rifle, that there was shooting and that we should not come. The police are securing the square and we have all been told to stay home. I don't know any details of what happened," said Separovic.

According to Croatian media, members of the police in bulletproof vests are deployed in the square.
