Pandemic defeats global economy, people in Central Banat District feel it too

The latest official unemployment statistics, released by the National Employment Service, show that there are 11,132 unemployed people in central Banat, a district in northern Serbia. The processed data concerns time period through August this year.

In August 2019, 9,410 people were out of work in central Banat. This speaks to the growth of unemployment in our region, almost certainly caused by  the consequences the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the global economy, writes Zrenjaninski.com.

The highest number of unemployed persons is in the territory of the city of Zrenjanin, 5,791, followed by Zitiste - 1,455. In Novi Becej, 1,374 people are out of work, 1,318 in Secanj, and 1,194 in Nova Crnja. By comparison, there were 10,177 unemployed people in the Central Banat District at the end of 2019.

At the end of 2016, there were about 16,500 unemployed persons on record in the Zrenjanin branch, which covers all five local governments - 8,143 in Zrenjanin. A comparative analysis shows that in just three years, the number of unemployed had decreased by almost 6,000.

And in 2008, the year of the world economic crisis, there were 26,161 unemployed people in central Banat, of which 15,385 in Zrenjanin.
