Ice skating season opened in Pionir's reconstructed Ice Hall in Belgrade

The new ice skating season started today in Pionir's reconstructed Ice Hall, and entrance is free for all visitors during the first two days.

Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic said that this is the only venue of its kind in Belgrade, and the home to all icce skaters and hockey players in the Serbian capital.

It was built in 1978 and since then, except for smaller, mostly unplanned renovations, it has not undergone a thorough reconstruction, said Vesic.

He explained that chillers, i.e., the machines that produce ice, have been replaced, adding that the new ones will be able to produce ice in the Ice Hall even when outside temperature is 40 degrees centigrade, which was not possible until now.

In addition, he said that all seats have been replaced, a new fence around the ice rink has been installed, while new locker rooms have been built.

The deputy mayor said that ice skating in the Ice Hall is a tradition and invited all citizens of Belgrade to come and use it.

He stressed that the Ice Hall is the fourth facility within the Tasmajdan sports center that has been renovated in the last few years, and recalled that the Aleksandar Nikolic Hall (Pionir) is among them, as well as open and closed swimming pools, and the entire space in Tasmajdan, where there are now new gyms...

"That speaks to how much we are investing in the sports center Tasmajdan, which is the largest sports center in Belgrade and in sports in general," said Vesic.

Time slots for recreational ice skating in the Ice Hall in October are on Thursdays and Fridays from 8 am to 10 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 12.30 pm, from 2 pm to 3:30 pm and from 8 pm to 10 pm.

Tasmajdan Center Director Milan Novovic said that the reconstruction of the Ice Hall started and was finished during the coronavirus epidemic.

"We managed to finish it and put it into operation, and the first training sessions started today, while recreational skating will start tonight," said Novovic and added that today and tomorrow entrance is free for all visitors.

He pointed out that the prescribed measures will be followed in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"We will adhere to the recommendation to keep a distance of two meters in each direction, and in that sense, considering that the ice surface is 1,800 square meters, we will not allow more than 300 to 350 people at the same time," Novovic added.
