Rare, important, 500 million years old species found near Zrenjanin: Its appearance is a sign
The species Pectinatella magnifica, which belongs to Bryozoa, a very old group of organisms formed 500 million years ago, has been found in the Special Nature Reserve "Ritovi Donjeg Potisja," located near Zrenjanin, in northern Serbia.
Members of the association Habi Prot, Ivan Tot and Jasna Jovanov from the Institution Nature Reserves of Zrenjanin found this species during a field survey of potential habitats of Freyer's purple emperor, a species of butterfly, along the banks of the Tisa River, which forms the border of the protected area, Beta writes.
Representatives of the Nature Reserve stress that Bryozoans are a very old group of organisms, formed 500 million years ago, and that their fossils are found in rocks dating back to the Upper Cambrian, Paleozoic period.
Bryozoans filter water and the immediate result of their greater number is an increase in water quality and an increase in its transparency, while their appearance is a sign of excessive soil fertilization and an increase in the concentration of organic nutrients in the water.
