Location selected: Trebinje Airport to be built here, first flights at the end of 2021
The airport in Trebinje will be built near the village of Mionici, and that part of Herzegovina will be given stronger connections with Serbia, the region and the whole world as early as December 2021, it was said today in Belgrade after a meeting between Serbian and Serb Republic (RS) delegations and a joint working group set up to build the airport.
Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic said that connecting the Serb people is important and added that the Trebinje airport will enable a better connection with the region and the entire world.
"We agreed to precisely define where the runway will be by Friday, as well as to form small operational teams that will do the necessary work in parallel, because we want to meet the deadline for the first flights to happen in December 2021," she said and added that at that time, it will take about 40 minutes to reach Trebinje from Belgrade.
Meetings between representatives of ministries of Serbia and the RS regarding the construction of the airport will be held once a month.
The minister also reminded of other regional connection projects between the Serb people on both sides of the Drina River, such as the highway Sremska Raca-Kuzim, Serbia's participation in financing the construction of the road from Raca to Bijeljina, construction of a bridge between Ljubovija and Bratunac and 11 other bridges.
RS Minister of Transport and Communications Djordje Popovic said that the RS (Serb entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina) would do everything in its power to build the airport in Trebinje and for it to become operational within the agreed deadline.
"It will be an air bridge between Serbs on this and the other side of the Drina. Thus, the long-time dream of Herzegovina's inhabitants will be realized. And the new airport will be important for the entire RS," he said.
The mayor of that city, Mirko Curic, stressed the importance of the airport for the inhabitants of Trebinje and Herzegovina, saying there was no need to discussed that point any further. "The plan is optimistic, and God willing, in December 2021 the first planes will take off and land from the Trebinje airport," he said.
The Trebinje airport will be located about ten kilometers from the village of Mionici, which has been picked for traffic and flight-related reasons. It is planned to build a runway 3.5 kilometers long, airport taxi tracks of 4.5 kilometers, and a terminal on 7,000 square meters.
As previously announced, Serbia will invest 55 million euros in the construction of the airport.
