The director of the ORL (Otorhinolaryngology) Clinic of the Clinical Center in Nis, Dusan Milisavljevic, says that a team of doctors will check on seriously ill patients to see whether coronavirus had damaged their sense of hearing.

Milisavljevic explained for RTS that the doctors assume that, since coronavirus attacks the sense of taste and smell, it can also create a problem with the sense of hearing.

A team of doctors entered the red zone of the Nis Clinical Center, and patients are checked through a standard ORL examination as well as an audiometer. It is indicated that in some patients there is a decrease in hearing at high frequencies.

"Patients complain of instability, tinnitus, we are mostly interested in whether there is damage to hearing. We intend to examine more than 100 of the most serious patients and in a couple of weeks we will inform the public whether there has been any damage," said the director of the ORL Clinic in Nis.

A detailed examination lasting 40 minutes will be performed on patients who are not on ventilators.

According to him, phone numbers will be taken from these patients in order to check whether their sense of smell and taste has returned and about the condition of their ears a month after the end of treatment.

"We want everyone in their field to get to know this virus. Science is united, we have a smooth flow of information and we will forward the results. This is the contribution of the Nis ORL Clinic and pf thr Serbian healthcare, I think that is the only way to defeat the virus," said Milisavljevic.
