Haradinaj is a possible candidate for Pristina's president

The leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj, can be a candidate for the president of the provisional institutions in Pristina, it was announced yesterday after the meeting of the party's council.

AAK Deputy President Ardian Gini said there are initiatives to make Haradinaj a presidential candidate.

According to him, new circumstances are possible when it comes to the election of the president, even if the indictment against the current president Hashim Thaci is not confirmed, Radio Free Europe reports.

"We all hope that the indictment will not be confirmed, but we still must enter the process of electing the president in four or five months," Gini said.

Haradinaj confirmed on Facebook that he could be a candidate for president.

"I believe that I will be a candidate for president, if that is discussed on the basis of the constitution, I consider it a great responsibility and it is a special honor for me," Haradinaj wrote.

The partners within the ruling coalition in Kosovo, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo, have not agreed on who would take over after Thaci's mandate expires in the spring of 2021.

The specialist prosecutor's office announced at the end of June that it on April 24 forwarded an indictment for war crimes and crimes against humanity for confirmation, raised against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo Kadri Veseli and some other former KLA members, whose names have not been published.

Thaci said that, if the indictment against him is confirmed, he would resign as president.
