Father beat 2.5-month-old baby in Vrsac: It passed away after more than 40 days of fight to survive

A baby from Vrsac, only two and a half months old, died on Friday at the Institute for Mother and Child after, as Telegraf.rs has learned, its father,T.M., beat it.

As we have found out, the mother came to the Institute with a male baby on June 25, when a case of domestic violence was reported to the competent institutions.

This is confirmed for Telegraf.rs by the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Vrsac.

"The case of domestic violence was reported to the police in Vrsac on June 25. The father was detained for 48 hours on the same day, while the day after that, on June 26, he was remanded in custody," the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Vrsac told Telegraf.rs, stressing that T.M. is still in custody.

The baby's brain function was impaired

This brave newborn fought the inflicted injuries for a long time, as long as a month and a half, until August 7, when, unfortunately, it passed away.

Immediately after the child's death, the Vrsac Basic Prosecutor's Office issued an order for an autopsy to determine the cause of the boy's death.

After this tragic event, the case went to the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Pancevo.

The prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office, Nebojsa Zivkovic, told Telegraf.rs that the baby's brain functions were not correct, and that the autopsy will show the exact cause of death.

"The doctors kept the baby alive, but unfortunately it passed away. The father was remanded in custody and an autopsy has been ordered. We are now waiting for the autopsy results, after which the detainee will be questioned," said Zivkovic.

Not an isolated case

Unfortunately, such monstrous acts are not unknown to the Serbian public. "Monster beats baby to death," "Father killed one-year-old," are just some of the horrific headlines we've read in previous years.

Less than two years ago, Fardi Jasari (22) from Zemun was arrested on suspicion of killing his five-month-old daughter by inflicting severe injuries by punching her, which resulted in the infant's death at the Zemun Hospital. Jashari was recently sentenced to 14 years in prison for this crime.

In May 2019, Zoran Albic (25) was arrested on suspicion of killing his stepdaughter, 3-year-old Luna F. in the village of Prahovo near Negotin. As the media wrote at the time, Zoran battered the girl in the house, and then threw her off the terrace to cover up the crime.

He is accused of coming home drunk and nervous on the fateful night and starting to throw things around. The enranged man shouted at the child to shut up, but Luna cried louder and louder, so Albic started beating her.

1,715 children victims of violence

In the previous three years, since the start of the implementation of the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence, 1,715 children have been registered as victims of violence or as being in imminent danger of domestic violence, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Justice.

According to UNICEF, 17 percent of children are exposed to corporal punishment. Physical punishment is most common against children aged 3 and 4.

8 percent of children are exposed to severe corporal punishment, girls more than boys.
