Another mother dies after giving birth at Nis Clinical Center Nis: She was on a ventilator for days
A pregnant woman (34) from Vranje, who was on a ventilator in KC Nis, gave birth to a male child last night, but died soon after.
"In the last 24 hours, there had been a progressive deterioration in the health of the pregnant woman. The ultrasound determined that the fetus was vital, so a multidisciplinary team of doctors composed of gynecologists, anesthesiologists and pediatricians performed the birth by c-section due to the threat of the mother's imminent death. The intervention required superhuman efforts of the doctors, resuscitation was performed on several occasions and the child was born alive. The baby who was born in the 26th week of gestation is in the Department of Neonatology of the Clinical Center in Nis," said Radmilo Jankovic, head of the Clinic for Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Nis Clinical Center.
He expressed regret that the mother had passed away.
"After giving birth, she had a new cardiac arrest and despite our efforts, the mother passed away," said Jankovic.
The pregnant woman arrived at the Nis hospital with symptoms of coronavirus on July 3, and had been on a ventilator since July 18.
She had a coronavirus test done several time, which came back negative each time.
Andjelka Slavkovic, director of the Clinic for Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics, said that the baby is currently in a stable condition.
"She gave birth last night at around 8 pm by c-section, she gave birth to a child weighing 900 grams. Unfortunately, the mother passed away, and the baby survived. The child is on mechanical ventilation and currently its life is not endangered," said Slavkovic.
This is the second woman who died as a result of coronavorus infection soon after giving birth in the Nis hospital. A.P. from Orljan, had also been on a ventilator, succumbed to the infection on July 21, a day after giving birth to a male child who also passed away.
