Director of Batut Institute reveals if there are several types of coronavirus in Serbia's territory
At a regular press conference dedicated to the coronavirus situation in Serbia, Doctor Verica Jovanovic revealed whether there are several types of coronavirus in the territory of the Republic of Serbia.
The director of the Batut Institute of Public Health also explained how important variations of a virus are in the development of a vaccine.
"When it comes to the type of coronavirus that is present in the territory of our country, we don't have data on whether these are some different strains, nor was it possible to prove it. So, there is only one strain that was identified at the end of December 2019, and that strain is present in various epidemiological phenomena in the territory of many countries. It's just that manifestations in certain countries have been different depending on the moment when the virus appeared in the population and depending on how many people contracted the infection," the doctor pointed out.
The consequences are worse with more severe manifestations of the disease...
"Where those manifestations have been stronger and where a large number of people had Covida-19 at the same time, the consequences were worse. For that reason, I would like to stress that variations of the virus itself are the subject of research by many scientists around the world. There is ongoing work to develop different vaccines at various universities around the world, as you have had the opportunity to hear, there are variations primarily in the development of vaccines because the virus, that is the chromosomal material, the RNA of the virus virus is used in the process, which should be an integral part of vaccines, and be the thing that will induce production of antibodies, i.e., create resistance in the person who receives the vaccine," explained this social medicine specialist.
All results will be presented after clinical trials...
"We are still at a point when numerous scientific and research institutions are doing it in an organized manner around the world. All these results will be presented to us after clinical trials that are being conducted around the world. At this moment, we have information about the existence of only one type of the virus in the territory of Serbia," the director of the Batut Institute concluded at today's conference.
