Surviving boy looked for his little sister after Novi Karlovci crash, saying they were not to blame

I was returning home on a tractor after working in the orchard when I saw a wrecked car in the ditch and a boy running after me and calling for help. I stopped, and the child pleaded with me, trembling, "Help me, my mom and dad are in the ditch!"

Zeljko T., an apple farmer, thus began his testimony for the daily Kurir. He was the first at the site of a terrible traffic accident on the Novi Slankamen-Novi Karlovci road in which one-year-old baby N. Z., and her brother N.Z. (8) died, while their parents Vanesa Z. (26) and Milan Z. (34) were severely injured. 5-year-old M.Z., who was looking for help, was the only one to get away with minor injuries.

"When I stopped, the boy was repeating through tears: 'It's not our fault, we're a good family, help, it's not our fault...' The poor child was shaking. Although I was in shock myself, I put him on the tractor and went back to alert the police that an accident happened. At that point other cars started to come by and stop to help everyone," says Zeljko T.:

"Young men were pulling people out of the smashed car, and a child, whom I later heard had passed away, was lying on the road because he fell out of the car. I will never forget that scene."

"I was with the kid who couldn't come to all the time. It was horrific for me too, let alone for the child who saw his whole family suffer," he adds.

As he explains, at first he didn't even know that a baby was in the wreckage, because she was not visible.

"An ambulance first took away the boy who was lying on the road, and his father, while other ambulances started to take away the mother and the child I was looking after. The shock came when the child started shouting from the ambulance 'Where is my sister?' Then the police started looking in the car and found the girl, who, unfortunately, was already dead," Zeljko T. was barely able to say the words.

Residents of Novi Karlovci are still shaken by the tragedy that happened on Tuesday night.

"The grandparents of the killed children are in shock and cannot recover, the ambulance came to them because they were taken ill. In this pain, they have to organize the funeral of their grandchildren, and their son and daughter-in-law are in a serious condition in the hospital. Poor parents, they won't even be able to bury their children," say the locals.

As they say, the little brother and sister should be buried today.

According to the locals, the baby who died in the car accident was a true little angel, beautiful and happy.

"The baby turned one in February and they celebrated it in a restaurant. The birthday was like a fairy tale! After two sons, Vanesa and Milan had a daughter, who was a real darling, everyone adored her," say the locals.

Kurir writes that according to unofficial information, Milan has been transferred to the hospital in Sremska Kamenica and is under constant medical supervision.

"His wife is in a more stable condition, so she has been transported from Clinical Center of Vojvodina to the General Hospital in Sremska Mitrovica yesterday," said their source, and added that their surviving son is successfully recovering.
