Preparations are underway on Belgrade's Sava Square to erect a 23-meter tall monument to Stefan Nemanja, a medieval Serbian ruler, which will dominate the central part of this square. Images now show what this new public space will look like after the reconstruction has been completed.

On May 8, the part from Nemanjina to Karadjordjeva streets was reopened to traffic, and then it was the turn of the section from Nemanjina to Savska Street.

"There will be 250 trees on the square and we will try to make it as green as possible. In the upcoming period, the monument to Stefan Nemanja will arrive, 23 meters tall," Mayor Zoran Radojicic explained earlier.

The 11-meter-deep excavation has begun to build a new sewage pumping station instead of the old one, which is now in front of the Sveti Sava hospital, Goran Vesic announced a few days ago.

The excavation will last for almost a month, and then a new sewage pumping station will be built for two months. When the new station is operational, the old sewer station will serve as a backup.

"At the same time, we are working on paving the edges of the newly built road, i.e., the pedestrian zone - the sidewalk," wrote Deputy Mayor Vesic during a tour of the works.

A bicycle path will go through Sava Square, which should connect Slavija Square, Nemanjina Street and the Promenade. Then, when the part from Ada to the Pancevo Bridge is done it will be possible to reach the left side towards Ada and the right side towards Beton Hala through the line park, by connecting across Sava Square to the river.

"The idea is that in the next two and a half years, we will have about 110 kilometers of new bicycle paths in different parts of Belgrade," said Radojicic.

The reconstruction of Sava Square, with careful preservation of authentic historical layers, is being carried out as part of the largest construction project in the region, based on a project by a Spanish architectural team, which won an international competition.
