A 14-year-old boy from Serbia, Gabriel Djordjevic, who was brutally beaten by the police in Paris, underwent emergency surgery yesterday as the doctors tried to save his eye.

The operation, which was supposed to last about an hour, took more than three hours, and the doctors said that the first 24 hours after the operation would be crucial.

Gabriel received surgery in the famous Necker Hospital in Paris, which specializes in treating children, and the family told the portal "All Serbs in Paris" (Tous Lest Serbes A Paris) the operation was very complex and that the eye injuries had been more serious than initially thought.

In the end, the operation was performed successfully and to everyone's joy, Gabriel could see well afterwards using his injured eye. However, the boy is facing a difficult recovery. Namely, once in two hours, doctors check his eyesight, and in case there are no changes after 24 hours, his eye will havebeen saved despite a metal plate and the two scars that will remain.

Gabriel was beaten in the Paris suburb of Bondy in the night between May 25 and 26, when the Anti-Crime Brigade took him to a police station because he was in the company of a young man who was trying to steal a scooter.

On the fateful evening, Gabriel did not return home, and his mother thought he was with his older brother who had gone out to dinner. At around 11 pm, the older brother returned home and noticed that the boy, with whom he shared a room, was not there. He started looking for him all around the city.

They say that during the night, the police station in Bondy called the family and told them that Gabriel was in custody, due to the theft of a scooter, in which he allegedly participated with another young man.

His mother says that she asked about his health and that she was told everything was fine. She says that she called the police station at eight in the morning, and then again at nine. Each time she was told that her son would call her back. Some time later, a call arrived for the family from the Emergency Room of the Jean Verdier Hospital in Bondy to inform them that the boy been transported from the police station to the hospital. When the family got there they saw a boy with serious head and face injuries.

A medical report indicates that Gabriel suffered facial and skull injuries accompanied by vomiting, three broken teeth and a "fracture of the left maxillary bone."

Police officers were kneeling on the boy's head?

Speaking from the hospital, Gabrijel said that on May 26, around one o'clock in the morning, he was stopped by the police, while he was with a friend who was trying to steal a scooter. The two young men fled in two opposite directions after seeing the police coming. The police officers knocked Gabriel's friend to the ground, then handcuffed him and took him away. Gabriel says the cops punched him in the face several times.

He says that three men and a women were present during the arrest.

"They knocked me to the ground, put one knee on my head, the other on my shoulders and handcuffed me. A blonde woman was holding my wrists and feet while a bearded policeman kicked me in the head with his boots," Gabriel said.

The family seeks justice

The family of the severely injured Serbian boy has decided to file a lawsuit against police officers involved in using excessive force.

"I'd rather they caught him and put him in jail than massacre him like that," Gabrijel's mother said.

The boy is still in shock because of everything that happened.

"He's not eating, he throws up everything he eats. If I caught him (the attacker) and did to him what he did to my little brother, how many years in prison would I get? What we want is for the police to pay for their actions and to have police officers around who know how to react," said his brother Serif.

Little Gabrijel also received supported from the famous footballer Kylian Mbape.
