Leskovac is new hotspot, there will be more. We've gone through the worst, but the story's not over

In the Clinic for Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the Clinical Center of Serbia, there is only one patient on the ventilator due to coronavirus, nine are in intensive care, and as of this morning the hospital's capacity is used 70 to 75 percent, its director, Dr. Goran Stevanovic, has told RTS.

He said that Leskovac is the latest hotbed of coronavirus, and that more such hotspots can be expected in the future.

"The epidemic is quieting down, the raging wave is calming down. But, on the other hand, the appearance of new hotspots is something we expected to continue to happen. And data from other countries tells us that the epidemic is not over. We can expect new patients if we don't respect the measures, and the new hotspot will certainly affect the number of patients, and I hope not much the number of the dead," said Dr. Stevanovic.

The story with coronavirus, according to him, will not end during May either:

"New hotspots is something that has worried us from the very beginning and it is something we expected, and because of which Covid's capacity is not reduced. This is a story that will not end during May, either. There will be cases in June as well. The end is in sight, we have gone through the worst phase, but we have entered the beginning of the end."

He mentioned that the most important thing is to see what effect will be produced by the easing of protection measures, by people returning to work... That should become evident in five to seven days, said Stevanovic.

He stressed that the number of people on the ventilator at the clinic which he runs has significantly decreased.

"70 to 75 percent of beds are now filled. Only one patient is on the ventilator and nine are in intensive care," said the director of the Clinic.
