If you were born in Yugoslavia, you must have this scar on your arm. Do you know what it's from?
Do you know where you got the scar on your shoulder that everyone born in the SFRY (former Yugoslavia) has? This issue has been at the center of interest for days, since younger generations do not have it.
BCG vaccine is an extremely safe one, and it is used at the earliest age of a newborn because it effectively reduces the risk of developing the most severe forms of tuberculosis.
Scarring after BCG vaccination is formed in one to two months, and there are often jokes at the expense of people from the Balkans - how do you recognize them? Well, by their BCG scars.
The first vaccine that a newborn receives in the first 24-48 hours of life is the anti-tuberculosis vaccine - BCG, which is administered intracutaneously on the upper third of the left arm.
At the site of vaccination, a reddish painless papule is formed in about 2 to 3 weeks, which in some children festers and in next 1-2 months forms a scar.
In most children, the appearance of a small scar at the vaccination site goes almost unnoticed. The presence of the scar is controlled 4-6 months after vaccination. Scar formation is absent in less than 10 percent of children.
And what to do if the scar has not formed?
According to certain doctors, children who do not have a scar should be re-vaccinated by the age of one.
However, in children older than 12 months who do not have a scar, vaccination is not recommended because there is no valid evidence that this achieves the appropriate effect, i.e. benefits in terms of protection.
Take a look at some scnes from the former SFRY that could only be seen there:
Likewise, when it comes to vaccinated children under the age of 12 months, evidence of the benefits of re-vaccination is still limited.
