Dr. Darija Kisic Tepavcevic on a new theory that coronavirus directly attacks hemoglobin in blood
Epidemiologist Dr. Darija Kisic Tepavcevic responded at a press conference today when asked whether it was true that coronavirus was attacking hemoglobin in the blood.
"Yes, different hypotheses are currently emerging the about possible causes, that is, risk factors that can contribute to a poor prognosis, but also about protective factors, as well as different theories about the pathogenesis, i.e., the course of the illness."
"One is about hemoglobin, so there are some theories that coronavirus could affect the displacement of oxygen from hemoglobin itself, leading directly to hypoxia. These are theories that will be examined in more detail in the coming period," said Dr. Kisic Tepavcevic.
Responding to allegations that ventilators can be damaging to health, she said these are machines that are most valuable to us right now.
"There is no evidence they can adversely affect the course of the disease, mechanical ventilation is what saves lives significantly," she concluded.
