Dr. Tiodorovic: The situation in Nis is very serious and unfavorable

Professor Branislav Tiodorovic, an epidemiologist and a member of the Government's crisis HQ set up to combat the coronavirus epidemic, says the epidemiological situation in the town of Nis is very serious and unfavorable.

"In the old part of Clinical Center Nis there are 196 patients positive for coronavirus, placed in three buildings, 17 of which are on ventilators. In the new part, which we have now transformed into a Covid hospital, the largest in Serbia, we have 272 patients, among them 151 are from the Gerontology Center. In addition, there are currently 196 patients in the Cair hall, as well as in a hotel, and we have patients in the student dorm next to the Faculty of Medicine," Tiodorovic told RTS last night.

He added that the Clinical Center has 460 more beds available for medium to severe patients.

"What happened at the Gerontology Center was a big blow, 151 patients is a serious figure. This is a serious blow that has to be withstood, at this moment the Clinical Center is accepting that," said Dr. Tiodorovic, adding that a Covid hospital in Leskovac was also being prepared.

He said it should be considered that what has been done in Leskovac might be applied in other cities, but added that there is no need for now.

"We are preparing to open students' dorms for milder cases and to open the Nais Hotel. This would reduce the pressure on the Clinical Center," Tiodorovic said.

He pointed out that everyone was affected by the death of Miodrag Lazic, a doctor at the Clinical Center in Nis, who died from coronavirus. He sent his condolences to the family and said that "this people owes a debt of gratitude" to Dr. Lazic.
