Kon's message to Church over using one spoon for communion: We'll never see eye to eye on that
Video: Kon comments on communion in Novi Sad during coronavirus
In Novi Sad, believers received communion on Sunday including "the blood of Jesus" given to each person using the same teaspoon. All of them, without exception, also kissed the priest's hand. Just as custom dictates. Except - this happened in the coronavirus era. Epidemiologist Predrag Kon commented during today's news conference.
"Communion in Christianity is extremely significant. It's hard for me to talk about it. It is quite clear what measures have been prescribed as emergency measures, which is that there is no gathering of more than five people. That's one thing. On the other hand, there has been discussion for years whether this (way of taking communion) could be a way to transmit infection. We will never agree on that and it's clear that any epidemiologist will say it is a risk."
"As for some attempts, as seen in the Russian Orthodox Church, to soak antidoron (communion bread) in alcohol, this is an attempt. This is not enough either, but in any case it is far better than nothing. It is clear that we expect the Serbian Orthodox Church, and even its patriarch, to clearly give instructions to its priests and believers," Kon said.
To date, 249 coronavirus cases have been registered in Serbia.
