To date, sanitary inspectors have delivered about 8,000 decisions on self-isolation to people who have been in contact with others infected with coronavirus. Seven have not complied with the measure and they will be prosecuted in court, says Police Director Vladimir Rebic.

Speaking for TV Pink, he stressed that the police also detained four owners of hospitality industry establishments who did not respect the measure of the government of Serbia to ban indoor gatherings of more than 50 people, and criminal proceedings will be initiated against them.

He said that the police have reorganized, that some regular activities have been put to the side, and that the focus is currently on implementing the measures introduced by the Serbian government.

Rebic stressed that the police are checking on citizens who received the decision on self-isolation, first by calling them on their landline phone to see that they are complying with the ban on leaving the house, and then physically by going to their home address.

"I plead with citizens to strictly apply the measures that sanitary inspector put them under. We have seven cases of citizens violating the measure and leaving the place where they had to stay and self-isolate. They will be processed before a competent court," Rebic said.

He underlined that the measure of self-isolation for these citizens continues, and that criminal proceedings are being launched against them, while the sentence for those found guilty is up to three years in prison.

"The appeal on citizens is not to take this situation lightly. Not to be selfish and say 'nothing will happen to me'. You can still infect the elderly who will find it much more difficult to deal with the virus than you. If a sanitary inspector orders self-isolation, there are serious reasons for that," he stressed.

Rebic added that it's important not to panic at this point and not to spread the fake news. Two citizens are being prosecuted for spreading fake news online.
