Fragments of a meteor that exploded over Croatia found: The search lasted 10 days
Fragments of a meteor that exploded above Croatia and Slovenia ten days ago have been found in the village of Precna near Novo Mesto in Slovenia.
Parts of the meteor were found by Gregor Kos and his son Jernej in the backyard of their house on Wednesday afternoon, Croatia-based website Index is reporting.
The meteor exploded over Croatia and Slovenia on February 28, when a loud noise was heard in Zagreb and its vicinity, as well as in other parts of Croatia.
The meteor exploded 34.5 kilometers above Earth's surface, having entered the atmosphere at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour.
Two days afterwards the Croatian Meteor Network made an analysis, stating that such fast traveling meteors cannot become major meteorites, i.e., produce large chunks, but that all their material "burns up" in the atmosphere.
"However, smaller fragments up to 10 grams in size may survive the explosion and spread over a wider area," the analysis said.
