There are more bears than people on Mt. Golija: Winter is toughest, as locals lose all income
As we are saying goodbye to another winter which has been mild in most parts of our country, this is not the case on the mountain beauty Golija. For the locals of this mountain this is a common occurrence as the slopes of Golija remain white even in April.
Winters on Golija are not easy at all, but people who live there are used to it, so wildlife tracks and encounters with wild animals are common and locals are not afraid of them, reports Ivanjica Radio.
"We only see the tracks when the snow starts to thaw, we also see mother bears with their cubs. The locals are not afraid, although there are more bears than domestic animals. There's also wolves, deers, foxes, hares," says one Golija resident.
People of this mountain live very tough lives, mostly in agriculture and forestry. Raspberry farming contributes the most to revenue.
"In addition to raspberries, we also live off mushrooming and the wood. People work, they have these private companies, so they hire some of these more capable locals. But in winter there's nothing to do, for 4-5 months you can't earn anything. Whatever was earned during the summer is spent during the winter," adds a local.
Although Golija is characterized as a mountain beauty where development of tourism was announced years ago, for now nothing has come of that and Golija is mostly visited by people from surrounding areas who spend their weekends there.
The return of people to Golija, despite all its beauties and potential, is virtually impossible, so this mountain beauty remains lonely and empty.
